Why chatt is celebrated
According to the legend there was a king named Priyavrata. His wife's name was Malini. They both had no children. Both the king and queen were unhappy with this. In order to have children, the king performed a sonishti yajna with Maharishi Kashyap. This yagna was successful and the queen became pregnant. But the queen's dead son was born. Both the king and queen were very unhappy with this and gave up hope of procreation. King Priyabrata was so sad that he made up his mind to commit suicide, as soon as he appeared to kill himself, the great Shashthi Devi.
Shashti Devi told the king that whoever worships me with my true heart, I give them the good fortune of the son. If you also worship me, you will get the son Ratna. King Priyavrat obeyed the Goddess and worshiped Goddess Shashthi on the Shashti Tithi of Kartik Shukla.
